In 1812, seven deeply committed Christians set about to organize a Baptist church
in the town of Newport. Four of these were Joseph McPike, Charles Helm and Mr. &
Mrs. Joseph Todd. Looking back on this significant event, the realization that this church
has survived 185 years, shows the power of God in His church. Organizing on August 8, 1812
they met in various homes for services.
From 1840 until about 1843, the Church conducted services in the Newport Court House,
Newport Seminary and various schoolhouses.
On July 6, 1844, plans were made for a church building to be constructed on the south side
of Bellevue Street (Fourth Street) between East Row (Washington Avenue) and Saratoga
Street.
In 1891, property at Ringold Street (Eighth Street) and York Street was purchased from the
Congregational Church for the purpose of constructing a new church building. The entire
structure which was built for approximately $22,000 was dedicate on February 14, 1892.
As the congregation grew, additional educational buildings were built. The two story
educational building which was ultimately to be a four-story building with swimming pool
was completed in August 1926. Thirty-three years later, the Eighth Street building was
dedicated on April 19, 1959. Dudley Pomeroy was pastor.
Beautiful stained-glass windows which added to the worshipful atmosphere in the auditorium
were renovated in 1975.
This church, which has grown from the vision of seven dedicated Christians who 185 years
ago wanted a Baptist church in which to worship, continues to have a vision of ministering
and witnessing of Jesus' love to the people of Newport and Northern Kentucky. A favorite
descriptive term used by many of her members calls her(God's) Lighthouse on the corner of
8th and York. |
